Alaska isn't the type of place you should visit on a whim, especially during the winter. With bone-chilling lows of -40 degrees and possibly lower, packing the right clothing is crucial to ensure a safe and enjoyable trip. There should be a great deal of research, planning, and packing to prepare for the unique challenges that Alaska has to offer. With so many fun activities to do like dog sledding, skiing, or viewing the northern lights, it's important to pack the right things so you are able to enjoy the vast beauty of the state. This is a simple packing guide specifically for an Alaskan winter getaway.

Layers - For a base layer, thermals like merino wool would be best, but if you don't want to spend the money, you can get some made from nylon or polyester. Anything that wicks moisture. For a mid layer, a fleece or wool jacket for insulation. Finally, your outer layer should be waterproof and windproof. It's important to have layers in environments like Alaska because if you start to sweat, it's important to take off layers so you're not soaking through your clothes. If you're not careful, you can get hypothermia if your clothes get wet.
Beanie, Gloves, Balaclava
Socks - obviously, but invest in a good pair, like Smartwool or any thick pair.
Gore-Tex Boots - Something water-repellent that will keep your feet dry. Xtratuf also makes really good waterproof boots.
For those who are experienced in cold winters and live in these types of areas, these things may seem like a no-brainer. Being from South Louisiana, I had no clue what to bring when I first moved there. If you live in an area that doesn't sell winter gear, just bring the warmest jacket and pants you have and buy them there. There are plenty of stores in Alaska selling winter clothing like Sportsman's or Prospector Outfitters. Whether you're going to Alaska to do outdoor adventures like skiing or if you're planning on staying in a cabin the whole time, it's best to be prepared.
