Dare to explore North Americas tallest peak? I'm not that brave, however, there are plenty of things to do around the park and in the town of Healy. With breathtaking views, tasty restaurants, and unique shops, a trip to Denali will not disappoint.

Denali National Park is about a 2.5-hour drive from Fairbanks and about a five-hour drive from Anchorage. I have driven through Parks Hwy plenty of times on my way to Anchorage from Fairbanks. Every time, I was amazed by the mountains and always wanted to spend the weekend. One summer, I finally booked an Airbnb and stayed for a few nights with my husband and two dogs. I was heavily pregnant at the time and wasn't able to do much hiking, but I still had a great time exploring (or waddling).

There are plenty of low cost options for lodging in the town of Healy. I recommend looking on airbnb but there are also options like hotels and even a resort if you choose to go that route. I booked an airbnb called Denali tiny home for the weekend. It was located only one mile from restaurants and only fifteen minutes from the Denali park entrance. One thing that surprised me about the airbnb is that there were goats on the property. The goats were adorable and added a unique touch to the already cozy and charming tiny home.

Restaurants

Rose's Cafe - My go-to for breakfast.

McKinley Creekside Café

Prospector's Pizzeria & Alehouse

49th State Brewing - Denali Park - Everyone in Alaska knows about this place, and with good reason. The jalapeño poppers are so good.

There are also plenty of gift shops along the Parks Highway before you reach the entrance to the park, as well as a visitor center in the park.

If you want to stretch your legs, there's plenty of hiking from Riley Campground, which is near the park's entrance. If you choose to drive through the park (which is what we did), you will be amazed by the white-topped mountains and snow that never melts. You might even see some wildlife like moose, bears, foxes, and more. If you bring pets, unfortunately, they are not allowed to be walked on trails in the park.

There are also many outlooks near the park entrance where you can park and get beautiful views of the mountains. This is where I took some of my favorite photos.

If you drive past the entrance to Denali National Park towards Cantwell, you may find some interesting sights.

This igloo was built in the 1970s. It's unfortunately been vacant and vandalized, but I have read news that it is (hopefully) being renovated soon. It's such a unique and random sight.

Denali National Park is such a great experience for those seeking adventure or just a relaxing weekend. If you seek the thrill of adventure, there are plenty of options for backpacking, hiking, bike trails, climbing, and more.
